The aim was to visit Simla and be back in Delhi on Monday morning with this one rupee and to do it without lying, cheating, begging, selling my stuff or renting it out.
Why do this? Because nothing gives me a better kick than coming up with imaginative ideas and then taking them to execution J
Abhisheka

She is a teacher in Chandigarh. About my age (I am 28), very pretty, loves being a child and wishes that the world would just let her be! She gave me excellent company in the Delhi Kalka Shatabdi despite the fact that I stole her window seat. We discussed everything from her shopping binge in Delhi, her school in Chandigarh and her favorite students to my travels, my dreams and one particular girl I know Abhisheka is convinced I will marry. At 28 everyone seems to have conviction about one girl being the perfect match for you. Fortunately they all have different girls in mind. Trust me all is well!
Deepak (Deepu) Khosla

Deepu is a builder. He turned 50 last August and he I believe is a Leo like me though his faith in astrology may not be as strong as mine. I still tend to open the HT daily horoscope. He is extremely energetic, optimistic, an excellent communicator, very trusting of people, and has a mountain of pride. He first probably heard me chatting to Abhisheka and just said hi as the train pulled into Kalka. I saw a book on cancer with him, a field I have worked in, and we started chatting. Next thing I knew he offered me a ride to Solan (halfway between Kalka and Simla) and unknowingly but happily I offered him an ear for his stories.
In between, as we stopped for dinner, I let Deepu into my one rupee secret. At this point Deepu laughed loudly and insisted that we should eat together as friends. “An idiot is treating you to dinner, why do you worry?” were his exact words. I had a kingfisher, tandoori chicken and daal along with a healthy supply of peanuts as Deepu gave me a perspective on his court battles, his college examinations, his family and his various automobile accidents (he still calls himself the Schumacher of India and insisted on driving while his driver and his assistant sat in the backseat). After the ride to Solan, I personally feel he is closer to Montoya (sorry Deepu).
As we reached Solan and the temperature dipped to zero in the winter Friday midnight, my original plan was to find haven in the railway station. Deepu gave me a better option – the backseat of his car. He himself was staying in a resort. I humbly accepted the offer. However fate had something better planned for me. Deepu’s driver was checking with the resort people where he could spend the night and the resort people offered him space in their banquet hall. I pounced on the opportunity and laid my sleeping bag in the same hall. A carpet never felt warmer and I slept like a baby J
Gurbachan Singh

The next morning I used the banquet hall’s washing facilities and set out towards Simla. After a fruitless search for lifts at the bus stand and a few other inquiries I realized that the best way to get to Simla was to hitch a ride with a vegetable truck from the Solan Subzi Mandi. Unfortunately the trucks left too early in the morning and I was left hiking on the 40 km road to Simla looking for lifts along the way. The first car that stopped for me was Gurbachan’s Indica. An honest man, Gurbachan later said he liked the fact that I was polite and honest to him about my poverty. I had a ride to Simla and all is well again J
Gurbachan is a hard working, proud and strong minded man. He has grown from being a driver to an owner of two taxis. He has fallen along the way, in career and in love, but has only come out stronger. He shared the Punjabi idioms with which he lives his life and surprisingly they were the same I have been taught albeit in a different language. Sabar ka fal meetha (patience is a virtue), mehnat meri rehmat teri (work is worship, leave the rest to god). He gave me an aaloo parantha and a chai but refused to let me clean his car in return, partly because he felt embarrassed letting me do so and party because he didn’t trust that I would do a god job.
At that point of time I realized that I had food from home which I wasn’t supposed to eat. Gurbachan then said that he always offered prasad to hanumanji. My mom’s rotis and rajma made a nice mid day snack for the local monkeys (and dogs) of the highway.
We reached Simla around 11 in the morning on Saturday. I gave him my number and address and I sincerely hope that someday my friend Gurbachan will call.
Anil

As I reached Simla, I gave away a bottle of mineral water I had left over from the train journey previous night to a beggar on the street. The train ticket had been paid for and using the water would have been unethical. Giving away water when you are thirsty yourself is a very humbling experience. All of a sudden you start appreciating the need of the receiver a lot more.
As I wandered around, I reached the Embassy restaurant. My family and I used to frequent the place 19 years back during a winter trip to Simla. Inside Anil was behind the counter setting the restaurant in place. He saw Nandan Nilekani’s Imagining India in my hand and immediately expressed his views on the ambitious UID project. I am scheduled to meet Mr. Nilekani soon about the project and carried on the discussion.
Anil is a devout follower of the Krishnamurthy mission and really wants to be a good person. Soon we started discussing the Gita, the purpose of life, what is happiness and why are we here. He offered me a book of the Krishnamurthy mission and some tea but I asked for work instead. There weren’t any customers in the restaurant at that time so I told him that I will go scout for customers for him in return for lunch.
So off I went on my first sales job. In a typical MBA fashion I discovered three market segments. The first segment consists of Punjabi male tourists who have come to Simla with their families and who believe that all locals offering food and services are to be treated like puppies entering their houses uninvited (kicked around). Very soon I moved out to my second segment – couples in love – old couples holding hands or young couples with the girl’s hands still resplendent with a recent wedding’s jewelry. This second segment listens to you for a little bit but is hard to convince to spend some money. Finally the third segment consists of groups of young women who I thought I could seduce with my part-NRI charms. I did manage to convince them all that I meant no harm but that was about it.
After two hours on the streets of Simla I could not manage even one customer. As I returned to Ani, almost out of pity, Anil offered me food for my efforts. I eased the cramps in my stomach and gobbled on the food. I still had two pooris left over which Anil neatly wrapped for me in a foil as we said goodbye. On my way out I read something written on Anil’s wall “in the true state of helplessness one discovers possibilities”. This would come in handy later in the day.
The kind restaurateurs and hoteliers of Simla

As I stepped out of Anil’s restaurant a beggar child came running to me sensing that I had food in my aluminum foil. The child looked really healthy and full and at that time I decided that at least he was allowed to beg and my needs would be greater that day. I smiled at the child, kept my pooris with myself and moved on.
Water wasn’t a problem for me. The kind restaurateurs helped me out. All I had to do was to stop at a restaurant and be honest “Sir I am not going to order anything but can you give me some water please?” Not a single person turned me down.
When you have nothing to lose, you care about really basic things. “Is my stomach full? If yes, I can afford to laze around for a little bit till I need food again.” So I decided to amuse myself with the cultural program that was going on in Simla. After listening to jokes on Lalu and watching some children dance on stage, I finally set out looking for my next meal at 5 pm. The pooris were quickly gobbled up.
I went from one foreign tourist to another offering them a “guide with a unique perspective on India”. I could answer questions like Indira Gandhi’s claim to fame, the sustenance of the arranged marriage system etc. However the poor tourists had been flooded by local guides and were not interested.
As the sun started putting on the hills above it and we approached the coldest night of the winter till that day (Jan 2nd) I started becoming a little desperate. I had reached a true state of helplessness. The line in Anil’s restaurant was right. I started discovering possibilities.
I decided to find a place to stay where I could put my bag and then search for employment. I considered the railway station and the hospital but I felt that I would either have to lie or act in these places. Finally I reached Hotel Hill Bloom. The owner had a room which had a published rate of 1300 but he typically gave it away for 350. I remained honest and talked to him at length and managed the room at 150 and also a deal that I wouldn’t have to give any advance. The kind hotelier had given me some hope.
Bhanu and his wife

With a fresh focus of arranging the next meal and 150 rupees by mid day Sunday, I decided to go from dhaba to dhaba asking to be a waiter. At the first dhaba itself, as the dhabawaalah turned me down, Bhanu and his wife called me and asked me to have a tea with them. Bhanu is in the travel business and his wife works for a non-profit. They are both probably younger than me and seem very much in love with each other. They were curious about why I was looking for a job. I explained the situation to them and then Bhanu said “you must meet Guruji”.
Guruji

Guruji was sitting in his small Wahoe Travels shop warming his hands when I walked in with Bhanu. Guruji is probably past fifty but looks much younger than he is. His face has the glow that a calm person has. He is very well respected in his circles. One look into his eyes tells you that he is a believer. He decided to put his faith in me. He offered to pay my hotel bill, give me food till next evening and 50 rupees for the trip back to Kalka. I did not think it was possible for me to do accounts or strategy for Wahoe Travels or his side business of semi precious jewelry. I promised him that I would generate sales for his jewelry. So I set out at 7 pm with necklaces of Himalayan Crystals in my hand and a lot of hope.
Mehar Singh

Mehar walked along with me as I set out on the streets of Simla to sell Himalyan crystals necklaces. Mehar is from a village close to Simla. He works for Guruji’s travel business and has been trained by him. He dreams about going outside India and making a name for himself in the travel business. He cares about his family immensely and as the 21 year old eldest son, he feels like a father to siblings. Mehar and I soon developed a strong bond as I shared my stories of foreign travels with him and heard his village stories. Mehar was very impressed with the energy and enthusiasm I brought to the sales job. I approached more than twenty potential customers and had long conversations. Unfortunately there were still no sales.
Mehar took me out for dinner as per my agreement with Guruji. I realized that these crystal necklaces were hard to sell and I would be lucky to sell even one. I retreated back to my hotel very tired but determined to make some money for Guruji the next day.
I thought all night long and made several changes to my sales strategy. Prices from changed from 250 to 190 to make them appear much cheaper. Bundles were made (two for 290). I decided to carry only three or four necklaces in my hand instead of a bundle so they would look precious. I decided to emphasize on the fact that Guruji religiously gives away 10% of the revenue to a local NGO supporting Mehar’s village. I decided that Mehar and I should sell separately because we attract fundamentally different kind of customers. Finally I decided to rebrand the crystals to “Himalyan Peace Crystals” as they are said to bring peace of mind.
I met Mehar over breakfast. We first discussed the possibility of my friends visiting his village. Next I explained the strategy to him. Within three hours, all sales records were broken and Guruji’s investment in me had been more than quadrupled. All is well J.
The Kind British Lady

She is about 50 and an educationalist exploring India. She was gazing at Mahatma Gandhi’s statue and the wide screen TV behind it when I met her. We struck up a conversation about the changing India and Gandhi’s relevance in it. We also discussed India’s education system as we both have an interest in the field.
She would go on to be my biggest customer. While doing my sale I remained honest. I told her that only 10% of the proceeds would go to a non-profit, that I charge a differentiated price to foreign customers and that the crystals are only said to bring peace of mind and the rest is up to the owner’s faith. She was a believer and I salute her for that. All is well J
Guruji’s friends and customers

I met a Delhi Metro employee who gave his take on why we don’t have more trains, I met a skating ring owner organizing a roller skates rally from Simla to Delhi and I met more travel agents. In a nutshell, by Sunday afternoon, I had become popular in Guruji’s circle. Guruji even organized a small farewell party for me with the cake. He generously gave me a bonus for my bumber sale – 250 rupees! Now I had enough money for a ticket all the way to Delhi and even a small meal. We said goodbyes and my good friend Mehar walked me to the Simla train station in the rain.
The first and second ticket checkers

With enough money for a journey back to Delhi I believed that the task was over. I ate a little bit at the station as I waited for the train from Simla to Kalka. From Kalka I would have to change trains to Delhi.
In India railways one can buy a general ticket just to get on the train. If you want to reserve a berth, a separate reservation ticket must be bought. With a general ticket you can climb onto a “general compartment” and hope to get a seat.
The first ticket checker directed me to a general compartment where I took a seat. He was an angry man from Patiala who seemed to be approaching his retirement. An hour into the journey he came to me and asked me to buy a reservation ticket or to get up. I believe I was extremely polite in asking him why, since I was in a general compartment. I wasn’t the only one being asked to pay. The three young sardarjis from a Chandigarh college were also asked by the first ticket checker. Fortunately I remained completely clam and requested him a reason for his request. The first ticket checker’s temper however was disturbed due to some other reason. “I have a guard with a gun” he threatened. “His gun may be rusted but my katar (knife) isn’t” replied one of the sardarji’s. At this point I stood up and asked the first ticket checker about different options that were legitimate in his view. “Sit in the empty berths in the next compartment” he screamed. I laughed in my head, smiled gently and led the three young sardarjis to the next compartment where we found even more comfortable seats.
The first ticket checker did return later to threaten us with a fine. I told him that if it was legitimate we would pay. He never came back. The three young sardarji’s became younger brothers to me. I smiled at their really funny jokes and they listened to my requests of not damaging railway property “matt kar bhai.. tutt jayegi khidki (don’t do that brother, the window will break)”
I reached Kalka around 11 pm on Sunday night. After buying a general ticket from Kalka to Delhi I had enough money left to by a reservation ticket. I decided to go to the second ticket cheker’s office in Kalka railway station buy it. That would allow me to take an upper sleeper berth which is better protected from the winter chill. The second ticket checker was as angry as the first one. The cost of the reserved ticket was eighty rupees but he refused to give my twenty rupees change back. “You want change from me” was his reply. “Yes” I said and ran out into the railway station looking for change of a hundred. The task wasn’t simple as the clock touched midnight and my train was ready to leave but I somehow managed. I dumped the eighty rupees, picked up my ticket, squeezed in time to buy some peanuts and parked myself in my upper berth. The battle had been won.
My father

He drove into Azadpur station early in the morning to receive me at the station. My phone was out of battery but a couple of kind people let me use their phones to coordinate with my father. They even refused the money I offered to make a call. So I got back home with my father with fourteen rupees (a handsome return of 300% per day). My father was surprisingly calm as I told him about the trip I had been on. All is well J
My friends, my uncle, Nandan Nilekani and Aamir Khan

This is the group I must thank - my friends Rohan and Dhruv Swamini for their constant encouragement; my friend Ritu for bearing my tantrums in moments of despair; my mama for the concern and comfort; Mr. Nandan Nilekani for his book which gave me a lot of legitimacy and opened some doors for me in Simla; and finally Aamir Khan – I saw 3 idiots only after the trip but his line makes a lot of sense – “All is well” J
Prologue

My father came to drop me at the station at Delhi on Friday afternoon. He put some cash in my hands. At that point of time I did not want to tell him that I was going on a one rupee trip. Neither did I want to lie to him. I neatly wrapped the money and put it at the bottom of my bag. I do not feel guilty about the cash because quite honestly if sometime during the trip I really decided to give up I could have simply called home. I am never really in serious trouble in India, such is the safety of your homeland. of the most successful nonprofits helping black children break the cycle of poverty through education, laid off 140 employees, or 10% of its workforce in the recent months. The root cause was an expected reduction in revenue by $5 MM or over 7%, as charitable contributions from Wall Street have come down. Part of HCZ's endowment was also invested with Madoff.

This is unfortunate for various reasons. One, the 140 employees would find it extremely difficult to find a new job. Second,1,000 underprivileged children would miss out on the skills and values which HCZ inculcates. Hence, a third of those would potentially end up in prison. Yes, a third of a black boy born in 2001 would go to a prison.

However, all is not lost. Each of us can take an action and give our children the privileges that they deserve.

You can volunteer time

You can donate money

You can pray

You can raise awareness and talk about HCZ. says the purpose of music is to create silence. Indian Ocean does that very beautifullly. I had the privilege of hearing them in person today and it was mindblowing. Today, I sang, I danced, I blissed out. Thank you Indian Ocean. When I met Asheem Chakravarty at backstage to get his autograph, I commented "You must be working very hard". He replied "We just have fun". And so it seemed. In the entire performance today, all they were having was fun. Sheer fun and nothing else. And so was the crowd. Enjoying to the fullest. Cheers!

Whatever Happens, Happens for a Reason

My belief in this principle keeps getting stronger.

One of my close friends had been interning at an information services company for over 8 months. Her managers loved her work, commitment and initiative. Inspite of this consistent performance and an explicit expression of interest to work at the company, the company did not extend her a full-time offer.

Her anxiety levels were very high and she was struggling on what to do to secure employment. Conversations with her managers resulted in nothing but an advice to hold on to the internship as long as she could.

Last week, the company went through a major restructuring exercise and laid off 30% of its employee base. Many of the employees who were asked to leave were newly hired employees.

As my friend was an intern and not an employee, she was outside the required headcount targets and was saved from the laying off process.

Now she was able to understand and appreciate her manager's master plan and appreciate why it was in her interest that she was not on the pay-roll.

So, my dear friends, don't fret, don't worry - Just Act! Rest will follow. Do not let your actions be influenced by even an iota of intertia or doubt in the master plan.

Banku Bhaiya Kabhi Na Haare

Kya dhaasoon movie banai hai - Bhootnath!
